We are lucky enough to be running an after school 'Mad Science' Science club in school throughout June & July for Years 3-6. The club runs for 6 weeks and covers a wide range of scientific skills and actvities. Keep posted as we give you a week-by-week run down of what we have learnt!
Week 1: Science of Toys- What makes toys work? Move out of the way for motorized toys and take a spin with kinetic tops. Balance a bird to reveal its centre of gravity. We also got to take a Yo-Yo home to keep our wrists twsiting!
Week 2: Detective Science - Help crack the case of Aunt Barbara's stolen recipe & Mr. Baker's nibbled award winning cookie. Inspect fingerprints, mystery powder and ink samples. We also took home a persoanl profile to help us build an identity kit- CSI eat your heart out!
Week 3: Earthworks- Dig into Earth's Science! Uncover rock samples & see how they are formed. Model the moving plates that cause bends and breaks to the Earth & explode a volcano with baking powder & vinegar.
Week 4: Bugs!- Engross yourself in entomology! Inspect authentic insect specimins and up-date your insect anatomy 'know how'. Match up insects with their habitats and get 'bug-eyed' with your very own Insect-A-Vision kit!
Week 5: Mad Machines- See how simple machines lighten your load! Launch with levers, secure with screws and work with wedges. Use pulleys to move heavy objects with ease. We also had our own drag race with cars with propellers and even took home a foam aeroplane!
Week 6: Movie Effects- Discover why science is the real star on the big screen. Create cool sounds effects and see a toy with 3D technology. Make motion picture books come to life and sketch a short feature in your own Cartoon Creator flipbook.
