Year 1 belong in three classes: Mrs Sanghera teaches 1Sa, Miss Smith teaches 1Sm and Mrs Sheppard and Mrs Humphreys teach 1HS. In Literacy and Numeracy we have Mrs Karam to help us. Mrs Howell and Mrs Takhi are our teaching assistants. This year our topics are 'Building Blocks', 'Come Rain or Shine' and 'My Wonderful World'.
Our Trip To Avoncroft Museum
We visited Avoncroft Museum as part of our topic on how houses were built in the past. We had a fantastic time exploring houses from long ago. We even had a go at making our own brick!
Designing and Making A Chair For Baby Bear
We enjoyed using junk materials to create a chair for baby bear. We designed the chairs ourselves and thought carefully about what we would need and what we would do.
We had great fun dressing up as our favourite superhero or princess and raising lots of money for Children In Need Day.
We are learning about the weather. We have created large weather symbols using a variety of materials e.g. felt, paint, foil and sequins.
We are also learning the capital cities in the United Kingdom and the seven continents in the world.
As a part of our Literacy lessons we have written weather captions and alliteration poems about the weather.
Designing and Making Our Own T-Shirts
In our Design and Technology lessons we learnt how to join felt, sequins and buttons to our T-shirts. We drew our design and then copied our design to create our wonderful T-shirts using fabric paints.
In science we are learning about trees and plants. We have enjoyed using the magnifiers to look closely at the different parts of a plant. We also went on a spring walk looking for signs of spring. We did an observational drawing of a tree and could label all of the different parts.
We are investigating whether beans grow best in the light or in the dark. So far we have found out that beans in the dark grow but they produce yellow leaves and the plants are weaker than the bean plants that are grown in the light.
We are having a competition between the classes to see which class can grow the tallest sunflower!
We all had a great time when we went to Dudley Zoo! Next half term in science we will be learning about different animals so it was great to see some close up. We even got to touch a snake, ferret and rat and we learnt a lot of information about these animals.
In our history and geography lessons we have been learning about space. We have learnt about the different planets and about the first space exploreres. We also made our own flying saucer or space rocket.
In Literacy we loved listening to the story of 'The Emperors New Clothes'. We thought that the story was very funny. We designed a new outfit for the Emperor and thought of lots of adjectives to describe our outfits. We also wrote the whole of the story in our own words.
Designing and making a Fruit Kebab
As part of our Food Technology lessons, the children have learnt special techniques of how to prepare food. They learnt the Claw Grip and Bridge Hold cutting technique.
This showed them how to cut food safely. They used this for designing and creating their Fruit Kebab.
