MATHS

At Sledmere Primary School, we believe that all learners can enjoy and succeed in Maths and that a high-quality mathematics education is important for our pupils and society. We aim for all children to think mathematically, reason and problem solve effectively. To do this, we adopt a Mathematics Mastery approach by using the Mathematics Mastery ARK Curriculum Plus programme. This rich and ambitious curriculum is logically sequenced to enable all pupils to develop knowledge, skills and memory.

Our curriculum is underpinned by three key principles:

To support conceptual understanding, we follow a concrete – pictorial – abstract approach:

CONCRETE

We begin with the use of concrete objects and manipulatives, such as place value counters, bead strings and dienes. Through hands-on exploration and experimentation, pupils gain a foundational understanding of mathematical concepts that can later be applied to more complex problems.

PICTORIAL

Alongside the use of concrete objects, pupils are exposed to pictorial representations to help develop their reasoning and problem solving skills. These representations enable them to draw out mathematical structures and make sense of abstract methods. By using visual aids, pupils develop a better understanding of how different concepts are related.

ABSTRACT

Drawing on their prior knowledge of concrete and pictorial representations, pupils are able to develop their problem solving skills and make connections between different areas of mathematics.

This approach to teaching calculation aims to promote conceptual understanding and retention, which is our ultimate goal. We encourage pupils to apply and develop their mathematical skills in various contexts across the curriculum, enabling them to become more confident in real-life situations.

YEAR 4 MULTIPLICATION TABLES CHECK (MTC)

In June each year, pupils in Year 4 sit the on-screen Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), during which they are asked to answer 25 questions on times tables from 2 to 12. Pupils are given six seconds per question with three seconds rest between each question.

The MTC helps to establish which pupils are able to fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It also helps identify which pupils may need additional support.

Questions about the 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12 times tables are likely to come up most often and as these are the hardest for most children to learn, it is a good idea to focus on learning these tricky times tables with your child.

Times Tables Rockstars is a great resource to help support your child with this. There is an area called ‘Soundcheck’, which mimics the MTC. Speak to your child’s teacher for log in details.

Further information for parents regarding the MTC can be found at: Multiplication tables check: information for parents – GOV.UK

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD

Parents can support their children’s learning by assisting them with their homework, consolidating the learning that has taken place in school.

Your child may be used to using manipulatives in the classroom. To support with homework, we recommend the use of digital manipulatives which can provide a visual and interactive way for students to explore mathematical concepts and improve their understanding. One free website where these can be found is Didax (https://www.didax.com/math/virtual-manipulatives.html).

To ensure progression of knowledge and understanding, we follow the Maths Mastery Ark Curriculum Plus Calculation Policy across school. Should you wish, a printed copy can be requested via the school office.

Children in Reception and Year 1 all have log in details so they can play and learn at home.

Numbots is an online platform which helps children to understand, recall and develop fluency with addition and subtraction.

Times Tables Rock Stars is an award-winning maths learning platform that helps pupils practise and recall their times tables like a rock star, playing online adaptive question-based games.

All children in Years 2 to 6 are provided with unique log in details in order to be able to access and play at home.

WHY IS MATHS IMPORTANT TO OUR CHILDREN

Jacob – Year 2

“I love maths because I like doing adding and playing maths games. I enjoy using cubes and Numicon to help me solve problems.”

Hira – Year 4

“In maths, I like problem solving because it really makes me think about the maths we have learnt.”

Lilly – Year 6

“I like it when we do Rapid Recall in maths. It helps me reflect on learning what we have done in the past. My favourite thing to do in maths is long devision.”
