PSHE

PSHE Intent

We want our children to experience ‘A Curriculum for Life’ that equips all of our children with the knowledge and shared values which will enable them to be independent, safe, confident, healthy, respectful and responsible members of society. We want our children to successfully integrate and navigate through life as the pioneers for a better future.

PSHE at Sledmere

Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. Our policy reflects our overarching curriculum intent in supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.

Meeting all DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education, and mapped to the PSHE Association programmes of study, SCARF is a framework consistency of lesson plans , online planning and assessment tools to give teachers confidence to embed a comprehensive RSHE, PSHE well-being programme through the primary years. ‘SCARF’ is a whole school approach which ensures our school has a progressive and sequential framework. We nurture pupils’ self-esteem, self-awareness, confidence, resilience, health and wellbeing.

The curriculum is designed to ensure that children develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world, while promoting a strong foundation of healthy relationships, respect, and responsibility.  We have ensured that a safe learning environment is embedded across school in all of our lessons by establishing whole school ground rules for our PSHE/RSE lessons.

Progressive in its approach, the curriculum builds on each concept year by year, offering age-appropriate content that is aligned with developmental milestones. From early understanding of friendships, empathy, and self-awareness in the younger years, to more complex discussions on relationships, well-being, and personal safety as children grow older, our preventative curriculum evolves with the needs of our children. We ensure our curriculum meets the needs of our community and a lines with national awareness weeks such as  ‘Anti-Bullying Week’ and ‘Childrens Mental Health Week.’

Sequential in its delivery, our curriculum allows for a clear and structured progression of learning and rigorous approach to assessment including pre and post unit assessments as well as end of unit summative assessments. Lessons are carefully designed to introduce key topics, revisiting and deepening understanding across each year group, ensuring that pupils are equipped with the tools to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, and maintain their health and well-being throughout life. We strongly value discussion-based learning which supports children’s oracy development.

Relationships Education

Relationships Education is complemented through an online resource called ‘SCARF’ (Coram Life Education). Coram Life Education takes a three strand approach addressing children’s knowledge, skills and attitudes, and programmes are aligned with the National Curriculum (Citizenship, PSHE Education), covering all Key Stages. Coram Life Education helps schools meet their statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education, children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development, and Ofsted inspection criteria for personal development, behaviour and welfare.

Early Years Links to PSHE

In Early Years, PSHE is one of the prime areas of the statutory framework and it is essential as part of a child’s holistic development. We support the children to develop positive relationships with their peers and adults, feel safe and secure in their environment, learn how to lead a healthy life and manage their independence as part of our daily routines.

SCARF Early Years is designed to support the foundational growth of young children, and supports PSED (Personal, Social, and Emotional Development) of our youngest learners. SCARF focuses on fostering self-awareness, managing emotions, building social skills, and developing positive relationships. By engaging in interactive activities, stories, and play, children explore their feelings, learn to cooperate with peers, and gain confidence in social settings. Tailored to the developmental stages of early childhood, SCARF supports our Early Years Foundation Stage team to establish nurturing environments that promote emotional resilience and social skills, laying the foundations for lifelong personal and social success.
